Greens’ Global Hypocrisy -

The Greens’ policy of trying to destroy the Tasmanian forestry industry will lead to greater global warming and more severe droughts.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water David Llewellyn said Tasmania’s forestry industry is the most sustainable in the world, with emissions from regeneration burns more than offset by carbon sequestration from replanting and re-growth.
“If the Greens’ were successful in destroying Tasmanian forestry, more wood and forestry products would be taken from forests around the world which unlike our forests, are not sustainably managed,” he said
“The Greens’ campaign against Tasmanian forestry would destroy Tasmanian jobs and lead to greater global warming.
“Tasmania’s greenhouse gas emissions are already well below the national average on a per capita basis, and the Tasmanian Government is continuing to work to maintain these low emission levels.
“The State Labor Government is participating in investigations into a national emissions trading scheme, and we will continue to press the Howard Government to support the use of renewable energy through the MRET and other schemes.
“The Premier has also previously joined other State and Territory leaders in calling for national greenhouse gas emission targets in conjunction with a national emissions trading scheme.
Mr Llewellyn said the forest industry is undertaking a number of initiatives which will reduce the level of carbon lost through managed burn offs.
“ Initiatives include the reduction of clearfall in our forests, the number of high intensity burns and improving management of the forests to maximise recovery and accelerate growth rates which increase the storage of atmospheric carbon,” Mr Llewellyn said.
