NATURAL GAS TO DELIVER BIG SAVINGS FOR LGH -

Health and Human Services Minister Lara Giddings today announced that the Government would be seeking Parliamentary approval for a $4 million natural gas project for the Launceston General Hospital.
Ms Giddings told the historic sitting of State Parliament at the Albert Hall that the LGH proposed to install natural gas equipment to replace oil-fired steam boilers and convert kitchen appliances and heating systems currently operating on liquid petroleum gas.
“At the same time, the Hospital will install a natural gas powered co-generation plant which will enable it to generate up to 80% of its own energy needs,” Ms Giddings said.
“This major project has been developed jointly with Powerco and will deliver very substantial financial, environmental and energy supply benefits to the hospital.
“It is projected to provide operating savings of approximately $21 million over 15 years, with the capital outlay being recovered over the first five years.
“The switch from heavy fuel oil to natural gas to fire steam boilers will result in lower emissions and help to improve air quality in Launceston.
“A secure, internally-generated electricity supply will enable the hospital to continue providing services regardless of power outages in the area.
Ms Giddings said the Government would seek formal approval for the project from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works before Christmas.
“This will enable work to begin in the New Year and the financial and environmental benefits to begin flowing before the end of the financial year,” Ms Giddings said.
