Rise in greenhouse gas emissions predicted.

The Australian Greenhouse Office predicts the nation's greenhouse gas emissions will reach 109 per cent of 1990 levels in the four years to 2012.
The Kyoto Protocol aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and set a target of 108 per cent of 1990 levels for the same period.
But while Australia will only slightly overstep that target by 2012, a big rise in emissions is predicted within the following decade.
The Australian Greenhouse Office's annual Tracking to the Kyoto Target report says emissions for 2020 are projected to reach 127 per cent of the 1990 level, reflecting the impact of ongoing growth in emissions in the energy sector.
The Federal Government has not ratified the Kyoto Protocol but says it is committed to meeting the target.
The Environment Minister, Ian Campbell, says today's figures show Australia is tracking well and will keep looking for ways to work with industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
"The objective of the Australian Government is to balance our economic prosperity with environmental sustainability and we will continue to examine ways we can work with industry and the community to further reduce Australia's greenhouse gas emissions," Senator Campbell said.
"Without this strong action, Australia's projected emissions would be riding at 125 per cent of 1990 levels."
