Hydrogen to be sought after fuel in 20 years

CHENNAI--Hydrogen would be the most sought after fuel in 20 years as it is more environment friendly, according to Rainer Zietlow, head of the German expedition and driver of Caddy EcoFuel, which is passing through India on it way across five continents traversing a distance of over 50,000 km.
The vehicle being used for the expedition is a Volkswagen Caddy with a CNG engine, about 1,200 of which are being produced per month in the country. But hydrogen as a fuel is likely to face problems of production in large quantities and for this all the countries have to come together, Zietlow told media persons on Tuesday. He said in Germany 38,000 cars were running on CNG, which constituted 3 percent of the total and was likely to go up to 8 percent in a year's time.
G K Girish, General Manager Southern India of Schenker Logistics, said CNG usage was growing at 5 percent per annum in Germany and was 50 percent cheaper than normal fuel, which cost Rs 55. Schenker is sponsoring the expedition. Talking about India, Zietlow said CNG was more in use in public transport compared to Pakistan, where more private cars were CNG fitted.
