Long-term targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in South Australia have become law.
The Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Act is now in effect, setting a target of cutting emissions to 60 per cent of 1990 levels by 2050.
Premier Mike Rann says the Act makes SA the first place in the nation to legislate on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"The legislation commits the Government to work with business and the community to develop and put in place strategies that will put our state in a position to take early action," he said.
"Some industries, such as the wine industry, need to prove their green credentials in order to grow their exports.
"It is vital that what we do as a state to reduce greenhouse emissions goes hand in hand with economic development and community wellbeing."
The Act also sets targets for conversion to renewable energy.
It states that 20 per cent of the electricity generated and used in SA by 2014 should be renewable.
The SA Government had wanted to set an interim goal for 2020, but could not get that past the Greens and the Liberals in the Legislative Council.
Mr Rann says an interim target may yet be introduced.
"What I'm currently doing is looking at seeing if we can fill that gap by regulation," he said.
"That's possible I believe. We're just getting some advice on that at the moment because the Act does actually provide for extra interim targets to be established by regulation."
