New power station announced

THE construction of Australia's most energy efficient power station will not only create hundreds of jobs in the Illawarra during the next two years, there is potential to further increase capacity.
TRUenergy managing director Richard McIndoe said global energy infrastructure providerAlstom would waste no time building the first power station of its type in NSW following Premier Morris Iemma's announcement of the winning tender for the Tallawarra Power Station.
The goal is to complete the $350million gas-fired power station by the summer of 2008-09 when TRUenergy has identified a potential gap in peak capacity in the NSW market. Tallawarra will provide enough energy for 200,000 homes and will be able to generate extra power quickly, allowing the energy grid to cope with peak demand periods such as when airconditioning is switched on in hot weather.
Mr Iemma said Alstom would design, supply and construct the new plant that would help secure the state's future energy supplies.
Energy Minister Joe Tripodi described it as an environmentally friendly way to boost jobs.
