Flotech hails Madrid contract -

New Zealand firm Flotech says it has won a significant public project in Madrid to commercialise biogas.
The South Auckland-based engineering company said it was at the forefront of efforts to commercialise biogas around the world.
It hailed the ยต100 million (NZ$200 million) Spanish contract was the largest deal of its kind in the world. Flotech did not disclose the size of the contract but said it was a critical element of the overall project.
With climbing demand for alternatives to fossil fuels because of rising costs and environmental concerns, the need for biogas to become an economically viable and realistic alternative had become urgent, the company said.
The Madrid project would enable biogas to be piped to, and used directly in, a municipal gas system and for automotive fuel for public transport.
Flotech took nearly three years to clinch the deal, with the reliability and innovation of its solutions making the difference, director of biogas technology Warwick Bethall said.
Biogas can be used in any cng-powered vehicle or machine. It captures methane from waste and converts it to usable energy.
