Flannery calls for war on climate change.
Australian of the Year Tim Flannery says climate change is a bigger threat than terrorism.
The scientist and author has told a national union conference on the Gold Coast polar caps are melting and rain patterns are changing.
He says if current trends continue sea levels will rise, displacing millions of people around the world and increasing the potential for armed conflict.
Professor Flannery says Australia needs strong leadership and new policies to address the problem.
"The priorities are: secure our energy sector, to move as rapidly as possible to low emissions technology and that means getting on a war footing," he said.
"Economists might tell you in conventional times that might take 20 years but when there's a war on you get it done in a few years so we need to move as quickly as we can."
