IPCC REPORT DEMANDS EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGETS IN TASMANIA

State Government Failing Moral Test

The Tasmanian Greens today said that the seriousness of the IPCC 2007 Climate Change Report, due to be released tonight, will highlight the inadequacy of the Tasmanian government’s Draft Climate Change Strategy, which fails to recommend mandatory emissions reduction targets for Tasmania.
Greens Climate Change spokesperson Nick McKim MHA said that the State government has failed to understand that deep and urgent cuts to emissions are needed around the world, and has a moral responsibility to legislate to ensure a cut in Tasmanian emissions of at least an 80% by 2050.
“It is just plain common sense that we need to significantly reduce greenhouse emissions, and for the Tasmanian government to propose a response to climate change which does not set a mandatory emissions reduction target is preposterous and morally bankrupt,” Mr McKim said.
“Climate change is easily the biggest crisis facing humanity, and for the state government to propose a ‘business as usual’ approach shows a complete lack of understanding and foresight.”
