NASA official 'surprised' climate change still debated.

These guys are missing the point .... every earth scientist knows that the climate is a dynamic , ever changing system. It's the hard-line greens that believe nature should be in some form of perpetual equilibrium. Therefore, they argue climate change HAS to be some kind of man-made evil.

A senior official from the United States space agency NASA says he is surprised there is still debate in some quarters about whether climate change is happening.

The official is one of about 200 scientists attending a conference in Hobart which is examining the results of 15 years of ocean monitoring by the satellite Jason 1.

Jason 1 is a joint project between NASA and the French national space agency.

The head of NASA Oceanography, Eric Lindstrom, says the satellite can measure ocean level rises to within millimetres, and the results are disturbing.

He says a lot of scientists are wondering when society will wake up to the seriousness of climate change.

"I'd say the major force involved in these changes is human-induced climate change, global warming," he said.

"I consider this data very serious and that there is climate change happening and that we need to be concerned about it."

Other conference topics include using Jason 1's data to protect the environment and predict the weather.

The Navy says by helping predict conditions under the oceans, the satellite can pinpoint where Navy vessels should be positioned to maximise their sonar coverage.
