NUKE | Who's doing what

Finland is leading the European trend back towards nuclear power.

France is soon to build two models similar to that in Finland.

Romania has restarted a project to build a nuclear plant that was halted 15 years ago.

Lithuania has been ordered by the EU to close its huge reactor, Ignalina, which is of the same Soviet design as the Chernobyl reactor. A new plant is expected instead.

The Czech Republic is due to start building two plants by the end of the decade.

Switzerland's programme to stop building nuclear plants has been scrapped. The lifetime of five existing plants is to be extended.

Britain is undertaking an energy review that is expected to favour nuclear power and lead to the development of new nuclear power stations. The country's 10 plants are due to be closed before 2035.

Sweden, Germany, Italy and Belgium are considering a reversal of their plans to phase out their nuclear programmes.
