Japan offers its expertise in energy conservation - Yahoo! News
SAINT PETERSBURG (AFP) - Japan offered its expertise, gained from its energy conservation programs in the 1970s, to other countries confronting high energy prices.
"Ever since the 1970s and the oil crisis, Japan has done much to overcome those crises," said Japanese Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki during a meeting here this weekend of his colleagues from the Group of Eight.
Speaking through a translator he said he had presented the G8 with a new "energy strategy" drafted by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
The strategy includes numerical targets to encourage a reduction in dependence on oil in such sectors as transportation.
Tanagaki said Japan, which depends on imports for nearly all its oil needs, could also offer help "to other countries, in particular to Asian countries," at a time when oil prices are surging.
He recalled that a Sino-Japanese forum had been held in Japan in May during which Japanese officials spoke with some 300 Chinese counterparts of Japan's experience in energy management.
