Prime Minister John Howard says the Federal Government is examining a number of possible measures to try to ease the pain of high petrol prices.
Mr Howard says rising petrol costs are fundamentally caused by the price of crude oil and an individual country can only have a small influence.
He says there is limited scope for bio-fuels to have an impact and has played down the potential for relief targeting regional areas or excise changes.
Mr Howard has told Channel Ten the era of very low petrol prices is gone.
"We're going to have to unfortunately live with higher prices that we used to have as recently as 18 months ago, but I hope not indefinitely with the current very high prices," he said.
"But I can't promise any immediate turnaround in the world circumstance, but at the margin there are a number of things that we're examining, but they're only really at the margin."
