Arnold Schwarzenegger' name=c1> SEARCHNews News Photos Images Web' name=c3> Arnold Schwarzenegger announced, giving the low-emissions technology a boost.
"For the first time in California's history, a small hydrogen fuel-cell system will power the energy-efficient Christmas tree throughout the holiday season," said a statement from his office.
Schwarzenegger will light the tree in the state capital Sacramento later Tuesday with his wife, Maria Shriver.
The technology of producing electricity using hydrogen, one of the most abundant resources on Earth, is still in the early stages of development. Fuel cells emit only water vapor when they produce electricity.
California has some of the toughest environmental laws in the country. Schwarzenegger signed a historic bill in September to cap greenhouse gas emissions, making California the first US state to impose limits on gases suspected in global warming.
