Two coal mine accidents in China kill 10
Two coal mine accidents in China, including one at a mine that was operating illegally, have killed 10 people this week, the Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday.
Eight people, including six miners, a manager and a technician, died in a gas leak on Wednesday in a mine in the northern province of Henan, the news agency said, citing the local safety watchdog.
"The mine had been shut down for a safety overhaul, but its management had illegally resumed operations," it quoted an investigator as saying.
In another accident on Wednesday, in northwestern China's Ningxia Hui autonomous region, two miners died and two were injured in a cave-in at a coal mine, it said.
China has the world's deadliest coal industry. Last year, 4,746 workers were killed in mine blasts, floods and collapses as collieries pushed production beyond safety limits to meet buoyant demand.
Coal mine accidents killed 357 more people in China in the first two months of this year, according to the State Administration of Work Safety.
