ACCC warns petrol companies on price fixing
The head of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has accused petrol retailers around Australia of keeping prices at the pumps artificially high.
Graeme Samuel has demanded the companies immediately bring prices down to reflect world crude oil prices.
He says while the ACCC does not have the power to force petrol companies to stop overcharging, it is trying to shame them into reducing their prices:
"There's almost an overwhelming community concern about what's happening in petrol prices," he said.
"Now if ultimately the petrol companies ignore those complaints, ignore our remonstrations and ignore the community expectations, then they can't be at all surprised if governments around the country turn around and say 'we're going to regulate you'.
"That will cost the petrol companies dearly."
