all revved up over Natural Gas
Call for the Council to Go Natural! - Doug Parkinson, MLC - Tasmanian Government Media Releases
Member for Wellington Doug Parkinson is all revved up over Natural Gas and he wants the Hobart City Council to follow suit.
“While the Hobart City Council is looking at alternative fuels and hybrid vehicles, it would do well to look at the possibility of running its fleet on natural gas.
“The Council should read the Parliamentary Committee Report on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a vehicle fuel.
“I’d like the council to look at the possibility of a Partnership with the Government in a refueling facility.
“The facility could be used for all types of vehicles - fleet, taxis and any member of the public who decided to convert to CNG could use it.
“CNG is produced by compressing natural gas, it is mostly methane which is the cleanest known alternative fuel.
“The only thing that burns cleaner than CNG (or LNG, the liquefied form) is hydrogen which is still in the experimental stage.
“As boot space in most Council vehicles is not a priority, the CNG tank in the boot would not be a problem and with most vehicles used within city limits, a single refueling station would be sufficient.
“As a Fuel, Natural gas would cost around 60c a litre (equivalent) and that means saving money at the bowser for ratepayers.
“Even the Lord Mayor’s “limo” could be converted.”
