Aust gains support for new Kyoto deal.
Australia says it has received support from European ministers for a new Kyoto deal to cut back greenhouse emissions.
Australia will be pushing the new pact when it hosts talks at the United Nations summit in the Kenyan capital Nairobi today and will co-chair the talks with South Africa.
Speaking from the UN conference, Environment Minister Ian Campbell says a new agreement should focus on getting the big polluters on board, including China and India.
He says targets should be more flexible than the Kyoto agreement, which does not suit Australia and Asia.
Mr Campbell says he will push for a new Kyoto deal, which avoids targets and focuses on using clean technology to combat global warming.
"A crucial element to the new agreement will be a flexible approach that recognises the national circumstances of the rapidly industrialising countries."
So far delegates have failed to agree on a timetable beyond the existing Kyoto protocol targets.
The summit ends on Friday.
