LLEWELLYN’S DESPERATE ATTEMPTS TO APPEAR STRONG ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Massive Public Response is a Demonstration of Inadequacy of Government’s Draft Strategy

The Tasmanian Greens today reacted with astonishment that Minister David Llewellyn could make a Parliamentary statement on Climate Change today without proposing a single initiative to reduce Tasmania’s greenhouse emissions.

Greens Shadow Climate Change spokesperson Nick McKim MHA said that the reasons the government has received so many responses to its Draft Climate Change Strategy is that Tasmanians are appalled at the minimalist response it proposes.

“The massive public response to the Government’s Draft Strategy just goes to show how concerned the Tasmanian community is about its lack of specific proposals to reduce Tasmania’s greenhouse emissions,” Mr McKim said.

“David Llewellyn might be trying to talk up the government’s response to climate change today, but nothing can disguise the fact that the government’s Draft Climate Change Strategy was a hopelessly minimalist response to the greatest policy challenge facing humanity.”

“David Llewellyn’s statement today is nothing but an attempt to make it seem as if the government is adequately addressing climate change when unfortunately the reality is that he has been caught out responding inadequately.”

“In short, the Draft Climate Change Strategy advocates no change in policy to limit the individual carbon footprint of each Tasmanian, or to reduce state-wide emission output.”

Mr McKim said that the Greens had submitted a response to the government’s Draft Strategy which contained a range of specific actions to reduce Tasmania’s emissions and position Tasmania’s communities to be ready for the challenge of Climate Change.
