350 wind turbines on the horizon for Devon

Last Updated: 2:21am BST 19/05/2007

The largest offshore wind farm in the world could be built off the north Devon coast, it was disclosed yesterday.

The £3 billion project would involve 350 turbines, known as the Atlantic Array, standing north west of Ilfracombe,

Farm Energy2, the Devon-based company behind the scheme, hopes that the site will generate enough green electricity to power more than a million homes.

The proposal, which would generate 1,500 megawatts of renewable power, could also create hundreds of long-term jobs, with more in the wider community, the company said.

Farm Energy originated the London Array project in the Thames Estuary, at present the world's largest offshore wind scheme, which was approved by the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in December 2006.

Farm Energy's director, Peter Crone, said: "Every year the wind farm would avoid the release of 2.3 million tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to over five per cent of the South West's greenhouse gas emissions."

Devon county council's regional affairs spokesman, Humphrey Temperley, said: "The proposal represents the best opportunity for the local economy in northern Devon in a decade."
