GreenSmart home showcases energy-saving design

The Minister for Tourism, Arts and the Environment, Paula Wriedt, today launched Tasmania’s first certified GreenSmart display home at Kingston.

The home, which reduces energy and water use is at 23 Alfreds Garden.

Ms Wriedt said GreenSmart is an initiative of the Housing Industry Association which provides resources for member home owners, architects and builders on environmentally friendly construction methods.

“It is fundamental that we address energy and water issues in home construction,” Ms Wriedt said.

“The GreenSmart program incorporates these concepts as well as indoor air quality, sensitive use of materials, stormwater control and site waste minimisation.”

The Kingston display home provides examples of affordable, environmentally-friendly features, such as passive solar design, solar hot water and concertina foil batts for insulation.

“It demonstrates that we don’t need to make our homes unattractive and expensive to reduce our impact on the environment,” Ms Wriedt said.
