CLIMATE CHANGE: TASMANIA CHOOSES TO MOVE TOWARDS FOSSIL FUEL BASED ENERGY PRODUCTION!

No Carbon Emissions Estimate for New Gas Power Station

The Tasmanian Greens today are critical that the government has not picked up on the implications of the Climate Change challenge and has failed to inform itself of how much carbon will be emitted from the proposed new Alinta gas powered station from which Aurora has committed to buy all the electricity.
Greens Opposition Leader Peg Putt MHA queried the government’s integral involvement in a new fossil fuel carbon polluting generator, moving Tasmania further away from being based in renewable energy production and making no effort to reduce energy use.
“We are facing one of the greatest challenges in human history from climate change, yet the Lennon government has locked into enabling the building of a new fossil fuel carbon polluting generator and hasn’t even bothered to estimate the carbon emissions involved,” Ms Putt said.
“The Greens are appalled that the Lennon government has locked into enabling the building of a new gas generator while making absolutely no effort to reduce energy use, for example by introducing mandatory energy efficiency and rating programs.”
“Although combined cycle gas generators are advocated as a transitional technology from coal-fired power towards renewables by climate change action advocates, the decision to move Tasmania from being based in renewable energy production to increasing reliance on fossil fuels goes in the opposite direction.”
