Roaring 40s Wind Farm Opens

Energy Minister, David Llewellyn, today officially opened the Cathedral Rocks Wind Farm located 30 km from Port Lincoln on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.

The project will generate clean, renewable energy transmitted directly into the National Electricity Grid and contribute to Australia’s attempts to reduce CO2 emissions.

The new facility was built by Roaring 40s, Hydro Tasmania’s joint venture partnership with China Light and Power, using skills developed building similar projects around the world.

“Roaring 40s is a significant Tasmanian success story with wind farms completed or nearing completion in New Zealand, China, India and Australia,” Mr Llewellyn said.

“The Cathedral Rocks Wind Farm will generate enough renewable electricity to power over 25,000 homes and displace around one quarter of a million tonnes of C02.

“That’s the equivalent to taking sixty thousand cars off the road, or planting four hundred thousand trees.

“In terms of helping Australia reduce current emissions of CO2, that’s a big step in the right direction.

“What we need now is a commitment from the Federal Government to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels with a shift towards alternate sources of energy such as wind farms.

“In recent times we have seen wind farm sites with important energy resources laying waste due to the lack of incentive for development.

“This lack of commitment also saw jobs lost in Tasmania with the closure last year of the Vestas nacelle factory.

“By ignoring the recommendations of its own expert review to extend the national Renewable Energy Target program, the Federal Government has allowed two major wind farm projects in Tasmanian to stall.

“These would have contributed to the ongoing viability of the Vestas factory and surrounding community.

“The local Liberal members, both State and Federal, have stood in timid silence, while this has happened.”
