Wind farm on track after renewable energy announcement.
A proposed wind farm near Ballarat will now go ahead, after it was in limbo for 12 months.
Energy company Acciona will start building a 128-turbine farm at Waubra in September.
The company committed to the project after the State Government announced electricity companies will be required to buy 10 per cent of their power from renewable sources by 2016.
Acciona managing director, Brett Thomas, says Waubra will be one of the largest wind farms in the southern hemisphere.
"As a greenhouse project this is an outstanding contribution and the Waubra wind farm will deliver something like 750,000 tonnes of savings of greenhouse gas emissions alone, which is equivalent to putting about 170,000 cars off the road each year, so it's a substantial project."
Waubra farmer Lawrence Gallagher expects to host about six turbines on his property, when the wind farm is built.
He says the project's construction phase should not reignite old tensions.
"I think it's quietened right down," he said.
"The main problem was, when it first come out, everybody said property prices were going to go down and they wouldn't be able to sell, but the evidence seems to be that property prices will got the other way."
