Schwarzenegger announces California clean energy plan - Yahoo! News

Arnold Schwarzenegger announced a plan to increase the state's production of biofuels in hopes of reducing dependency on imported fossil fuels.
The plan targets the state producing twenty percent of its own biofuels by 2010 and 40 percent by 2020. California currently produces only five percent of its biofuel, and consumes 900 million gallons of ethanol annually.
Ethanol and other biofuels from corn and sugar cane are favored for providing clean, renewable sources of energy.
Schwarzenegger announced the initiative after touring an ethanol plant in northern California that will soon begin producing 35 million gallons of the fuel annually.
"Our state is a biomass goldmine with tremendous energy resources found in our agriculture, forestry, and urban waste," said Schwarzenegger.
"Taking advantage of our resources will be a huge step towards energy independence and reducing pollution and greenhouse gases, while at the same time revitalizing many of our rural and agricultural areas," he added.
